The makers of abstract visual art and improvised music have quite a few things in common. In evoking the personal emotions and memories of the receiver they invite their audience in an ongoing cyclical discussion where the private and the public meld together. An image or a sound can trigger the ghost of a memory, which comes unexpectedly to the open after being hidden away for a long time.
When successful, this interaction leads to unprecedented revelations and leaves a lasting intimate impression on the one experiencing the work. But transmitting and engaging is always a delicate, demanding and even dangerous operation for the artist. Why? Because they must bare their soul and put themselves on the line with no guarantee of any affirmative outcome.
With woodwinds ranging from a whisper to a wail and with percussion that tickles, grooves and explodes, Jorma Tapio and Janne Tuomi take that bold step and invite the listener to share their personal impression of sounds free and unbound. Like true explorers but also as weathered artists not new to the game, they dive deep and climb high in search of something novel, exciting and precious that will shake their own existence to the core.
On their debut album as a duo, Tapio and Tuomi go out on a limb because they know it is the only way to emit something honest and far reaching. And with a good two decades of interaction in various guises behind them, the reedsman and the drummer have developed a profound understanding on how to deliver the goods together.
Ranging in its mood from the serious to the wanton but always remaining primal and original, this sincere offering is an important new chapter in the book begun by Coltrane/Ali and further contributed to by e.g. Brötzmann/Bennink, Vandermark/Nilssen-Love and Gustafsson/Lovens.
JORMA TAPIO
Although hailing from the South Eastern city of Mikkeli, Jorma Tapio (b. 1957) spent his childhood in Tikkurila near Helsinki where he began studying music theory and playing the piano and the violin. However, the discovery of bebop changed everything. At fifteen, the budding musician picked up the alto saxophone and began an ongoing exploration into the world of flutes, pipes and whistles.
Tapio’s career as a professional musician began concurrently with his relocation to Turku at the age of 21. Soon after moving he began making waves within the local art community by working with prog rock group AD, poet Markku Into and various jazz groups. The first band Jorma could call his own was Lauantairyhmä, co-founded in 1980 with cellist Tuomas Airola and pianist Ismo Laakso.
A watershed moment came as the reedsman was 27. The hunger for new experiences brought him to Helsinki and the attention of composer/drummer Edward Vesala. The experimental Sound & Fury workshops spawned a band of the same name with which Tapio would perform and record arduously. Aside from playing a prominent role on the group’s releases beginning with the 1987 classic Lumi, he also appears on related key albums like 1988’s Ritual, the debut offering by guitarist Raoul Björkenheim’s Krakatau.
The four-man horn section of Sound & Fury stayed together for a decade providing Vesala and his arranger and wife Iro Haarla ample opportunity to research and develop a unique timber. During that time, the working relationship between the altist and the drummer was so strong that Tapio could be seen as something of a Sancho Panza to Vesala’s Don Quixote. After the mentor passed away in 1999, he became one of the instigators of keeping the spirit alive and Sound & Fury functioning.
Simultaneously with the Vesala escapades, Tapio ran the robust and versatile Hugry Tribal Marching Band and collaborated with leading Finnish rock bands and artists like Tuomari Nurmio and Sielun Veljet as well as improvising masters such as trombonist Jari Hongisto, saxophonist Pepa Päivinen and bassist Sampo Lassila.
As the new Millennium loomed on the horizon, the reedsman commenced working more with international talent, e.g. percussionist Terje Isungset and trumpter Arve Henriksen (both from Norway), trombonist Conny Bauer (from Germany), flautist James Newton (from the USA) and guitarist Keiji Haino (from Japan). In addition, he rekindled his interest of combining movement and sound through collaborations with dancers Kirsi Heimonen, Masaki Iwana and others.
With recent bands like Rollin’ Thunder, the Päivinen-Tapio Quartet, Frio, the Pyörre-kvartetti, Lekkujad and Sarastus, the alto saxophonist has perfected his style almost as in preparation for two new projects that will help him reclaim his rightful place among top Nordic improvisers.
Tapio’s long musical bond with drummer Janne Tuomi yields a haunting and deep duo album whereas the eponymous debut of Jorma Tapio & Kaski pairs the man with the muscular yet agile rhythm section of bassist Ville Rauhala and drummer Simo Laihonen.
Abstraktin taiteen ja improvisoidun musiikin tekijöissä on paljon yhteistä. Tunkeutumalla ihmisten muistiin ja tunteisiin nämä rohkeat artistit kutsuvat yleisönsä kehässä etenevään keskusteluun, jossa yleinen ja yksityinen sulautuvat toisiinsa. Sillä pieninkin yksittäinen häivähdys tai hiljainen ääni saattaa laukaista kokijassa muistijäljen haamun jostain kaukaa menneestä.
Onnistuessaan tämä dialogi johtaa yllättäviin paljastuksiin, tuntemuksiin ja kytköksiin, jotka puolestaan tuottavat vastaanottajalle yhä uusia intiimejä ja katoamattomia elämyksiä. Tunnemuistin herättely on kuitenkin herkkää ja usein riskialtista toimintaa: taiteilijan tulee laittaa itsensä sataprosenttisesti likoon ilman mitään takeita viestin perillemenosta tai muutenkaan onnistuneesta lopputuloksesta.
Jorma Tapio ja Janne Tuomi ottavat välineikseen kuiskauksesta kirkumiseen kurottuvat puupuhaltimet ja lyömäsoittimet, jotka kutittavat, svengaavat sekä kolhivat, ja kutsuvat kuulijat kaikista kahleista vapaiden äänien matkalle. Pelottomien tutkimusmatkaajien hengessä ja omiin kattaviin sekä monipuolisiin muusikon kokemuksiinsa luottaen he kipuavat korkealle ja sukeltavat syvälle tuottaakseen elämyksiä, jotka ravistavat paitsi heitä itseään, myös kaikkia kuulijoita ytimiä myöten.
Metodi on usein raskas, mutta koska Tapio ja Tuomi tietävät, että vain aito heittäytyminen takaa rehellisen tunteen välittymisen ja pysyvän muistijäljen syntymisen, ovat he valmiita astumaan kohti tuntematonta yhtä lailla lavalla kuin julkaisuaan odottavalla debyyttilevylläänkin. Tekemisen ytimessä on usko sekä omiin että toisen kykyihin ja luottamus vastaanottajien avoimuuteen.
Jorma Tapio tunnetaan Edward Vesala Sound & Furyn pitkäaikaisena jäsenenä ja omista hankkeistaan kuten Rollin’ Thunder, uusi free-trio Kaski ja Tuomari Nurmion Hullu puutarhuri -levylläkin kuultu Hugry Tribal Marching Band. Janne Tuomen skaala ulottuu improvisaatiosta kurinalaisimpiin klassisiin perkussioteoksiin. Kolme soololevyä julkaissutta lyömäsoittajaa on kuultu myös niin Circlen avantgardistisen rockin kuin Rakkan pseudo-balkanilaisen instrumentaali-iskelmänkin parissa.
Sekä isoissa että pienissä kokoonpanoissa yhteistä pohjatyötä jo kahden vuosikymmenen ajan tehnyt parivaljakko pääsee nyt nauttimaan kahdenkeskisestä reaktiivisesta ilmaisusta paitsi itse, myös yleisön kanssa. Ja vaikka tunnelma vaihtelee haudanvakavasta hassuttelevaan, pyhästä alhaiseen ja aurinkoisesta synkeään, ei aitoudesta tingitä. Tapio/Tuomi -duo on valmis astumaan polulle, jossa sitä ennen ovat loistaneet esimerkiksi Coltrane/Ali, Brötzmann/Bennink, Vandermark/Nilssen-Love ja Gustafsson/Lovens.
